That Person Is You

A stain glass window is all we ever really were. It wasn't that we were never real, in fact, we were just the opposite and it was that which was probably too much for either of us. That's why our conversations hid that aspect, always.

Strolling together through the corridors of a place we mutually held respect for, things went on as usual. Well, no we weren't, my mind couldn't survive a moment longer. With the intent of smashing that stain glass window with the largest rock I could find, I asked, "Have you ever looked in a person's eyes long enough that soon they look like two big eyeballs?"

"What?" She thought for a second. "Yeah, um, I guess. That's what they turn out to be when I just look at them, yeah. Where are you going with this?"

"Has there ever been a time when that didn't happen?"

She took a minute to think yet again. "Um, I don't know."

I sighed. "Oh."

"Why are you asking me this?" she asked, really wanting to know.

I tried to shrug the thought away, but she insisted to know why my thoughts delved onto that and asked me, "Why? Has there been a time when that hasn't happened to you and someone's eyes eventually looked liked eyeballs?"

"Yes." I exhaled heavily. "I'm not exactly sure what it is, maybe it's everything, I don't know. Anyway, every time I look into this person's eyes, something changes every second that prevents anything other than their 'magic'," my hands open wide as a gesture, "to be seen, preventing them from ever being something that's only real." I sighed again, then looked into her eyes. "That person, is you."

"Bit, don't," she replied, her voice and body language changing slightly. "I just can't take this any more, just seeing it and not being able to do anything about it. Inside it's just tearing me right in half. Do you want to know what it is?"

Her arms folded across her chest. "Is it love?" she asked, wondering if she already had a grasp on my thoughts.

A brief moment expired and then I sighed. "Well, that kind of deflates what I've been building up to say, but, um.... Ever since I saw you and slowly got to know you, you're the only one I've wanted to fight for. I always wanted to hear you say 'I want every single woman out of your life except for me'...or 'Come here, I want to be with you'...or just not being able to wake up every morning without knowing that you'd have the chance to at least see me that day."

Fretting her eyebrows and looking away, she said in a soft voice, "Baby, I--"

"The reason why, well, there's really only one. For the first time in my life, I'm torn between recognizing something and just letting go. I don't want to let go at all, but I don't want to ignore the old tale of nothing ever being truly yours until you let go of it and it comes right back to you. Painfully enough, you walk beside me to the room at the end of this hall every day and it's like you're right there, that one thing." I took a relieving breath and continued, "And then nothing. Literally one foot away and yet I can't bring it any closer, despite every part of me just wanting to burst into tears and scream the loudest screams in the vain hope of turning me into a huge neon sign."

I sat down on the nearby steps. Looking into my lowered eyes, she followed my hand and reached deep inside her. Resting her body beside me, she said, "I love you."

In response my body just seemed to warm up and fall apart at the same time, however it didn't move. Knowing this inside of me, she leaned in and wrapped her arms around the one growing man she knew didn't want to get old without her. After a few minutes she felt my chin press gently against her shoulder, it was very damp. Pulling her head away slightly, she said my name and noticed the reams of tears flowing out of my face, like a muted version of the Niagara Falls.

My hands wrapped around the sides of her waists and tightly held her sweater, just wanting her. Deep inside, she knew how much I wanted her and she knew how much she wanted to catch me. Resting the side of her head against mine, her arms wrapped tightly around me, being sure to catch every last drop....
